BERNE, Ind. (WANE)— Two months into the school year, the administration at South Adams Schools said the implementation of new technology on their school to keep students safe has been smooth. School bus drivers now have mounted tablets with a scanning pad attached. So far, only students K-8 use their IDs to scan on and off the bus using SMART Tag. On the tablet, the driver can see who is on the bus, who has gotten off, as well as turn by turn directions of their route. High school students will start swiping in the coming weeks. The district started searching for this type of technology a few years ago after one of their busses crashed and it was difficult to quickly determine which students were still on the bus and which ones had already gotten off. Though similar technology is being used in Indiana, South Adams is the only district to be using Smart Tag in the state, and it has been going quite well, according to Director of Operations, Doug Beall. "The secretaries in the office like it because they can now look on the system and see this child is on this bus," Beall said. "So, we don't have to radio out, 'Does anyone have this student?.' We can say, 'Hey, bus 3. We need this student to come back.'" According to Beall, issues have been minimal. The district has students tie the passes to their backpacks so they don't forget them. Parents will be able to download an app where they can track their child’s bus in real time. That rollout will come in late Nov., Beall said.
