EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- A 17-year-old man from Horizon City is facing murder and other charges after an early morning pursuit with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on Friday, Oct. 4 led to a multi-vehicle crash in El Paso's Upper Valley, DPS said. The crash killed a woman and sent a handful of others to the hospital with injuries. At about 8 a.m. Friday, Texas Highway Patrol toopers, assisting DPS special agents, attempted to stop a vehicle on Artcraft Road. DPS said the vehicle was going to be pulled over for an equipment violation and for being involved in a possible human smuggling incident. The vehicle came to stop, but then fled as the trooper approached the car, DPS said. The driver fled briefly, ran a red light, side-swiped two other vehicles and then collided with another vehicle at Artcraft and Upper Valley Road, DPS said. The male driver and five migrants in the vehicle that allegedly fled from state troopers were all transported to local hospitals with what are being called minor injuries. A woman in the last vehicle that was hit was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead there, DPS said. DPS did not give an age for the woman who was killed. The 17-year-old male driver from Horizon City is being charged with murder, human smuggling and evading arrest with a vehicle, DPS said. The investigation into the incident continues. The El Paso Fire Department initially reported that eight people were injured -- six with minor injuries and two with serious injuries. The roads near the crash were closed for several hours before reopening around 1 p.m. Friday.
