GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)--We are continuing to monitor what is expected to be recorded flooding in the North Santee community of Georgetown County as floodwater from the upstate and North Carolina goes downstream via the Santee River.  Exactly one week ago, Helene brought significant flooding to parts of the upstate and North Carolina, and now it's rushing downstream to Georgetown County. Water levels in the Santee River are already above flood stage and will continue rising through Monday. “We spoke to Santee Cooper earlier this morning, and they decreased their flows again to 25,000 CFS, which will help alleviate the situation moving forward,” said Brandon Ellis, Georgetown County Emergency Services Director. On Thursday evening, the South Carolina Department of Transportation started closing off roadways along Powell Street, Harris Landing, and parts of 17a because many areas are low-lying.  To ensure resident's safety, leaders started positioning barricades and stationing law enforcement officers at each closure area to prevent people from going around the barricades. “We always encourage you not to drown if you see the water turn around. The last thing we want is for someone to drive in the floodwaters and become a victim; also, don’t drive around barricades. DOT has a position and barricades in those problem areas. They anticipate that it will flood,” said Ellis. The North Santee community center is open as a shelter for anyone who may need to evacuate a home in a flood-prone area/ “You know we always like to be prepared for the worst. We want to make sure that we have made resources available for residents should it become necessary. I last heard that we have an open shelter in the Santee community. No one needed to seek refuge there, but it is available if anyone needs it,” said Jackie Broach, the public information officer for Georgetown County.
