BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — This weekend is one of the biggest college football games in North Dakota. And you could flip a coin to guess the winner, but you won't see the winning team hoist the longtime Nickel Trophy when it's over. For nearly a century, both NDSU and UND have played for the Nickel Trophy, but that trophy was retired after the last rivalry game in 2003. Dale Lennon was head coach for UND that year as the then Fighting Sioux beat the Bison in overtime, 28-21. Years later, the state legislature voted to place the trophy on permanent display at the Heritage Center. The best way to prevent mold growth in shoes The trophy is 75 pounds and is made of pewter. It was also stolen several times over the years by rival college students but was always returned before the rivalry football game. Since then, the schools haven't decided on a new trophy to replace it, and Lennon says they shouldn't. "The magnitude of this trophy was at a level that it's going to be difficult to replace. And the alum who had played for the trophy, you know, we really don't want to replace it because it just it represented a different time," Lennon said. "And, you know, which is something that was so powerful at that point where to find something to replace it. It'll take a while before it has the same importance that this trophy had." State lawmakers have since tried adding their two cents at the state capitol to revive the nickel rivalry, but so far, no dice. Lennon is now in charge of the State Historical Society Foundation. Saturday's UND, NDSU game kicks off at 2:30 p.m., you can see it on ABC and ESPN+. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
