ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Street closures and age restrictions in Rochester's East Avenue and Alexander Street area will continue "for the next several weeks,” Mayor Malik Evans said Friday, after after hearing positive feedback from business owners. The city announced the plan last week, declaring the area a “Special Event Zone” in order to enact the restrictions under Evans’ Gun Violence State of Emergency, which has been in place since July, 2022. Between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Saturdays, roadways in the area will be closed to traffic except for residents and workers. Pedestrians age 21 and up will be able to enter the zone through four checkpoints: Chapman Alley and Alexander Street East Avenue and Alexander Street East Avenue and South Union Street Lawrence and Charlotte Streets Photo identification is required to get in, and wristbands will be issued to those who enter. According to the city, more than 1,000 wristbands were issued last weekend. In a statement issued Friday, business owners said it created an entertainment district atmosphere. “Right now, it’s creating a festival vibe," The Daily Refresher General Manager Paul Hogue said. "Businesses here are coming together to plan ways to improve and expand the entertainment district in the weeks to come.” The City of Rochester is scheduled to share more information at 1:30 p.m. Friday. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
