TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) --- A woman convicted of orchestrating the murders of a Wichita couple who operated a business at fairs and festivals has had her conviction affirmed by the Kansas Supreme Court. Kimberly Younger was sentenced in 2021 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for one count of premeditated capital murder, one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, one count of solicitation to commit first-degree murder, and one count of theft in the deaths of Sonny and Pauline Carpenter. Younger convinced the other workers that killing the Carpenters would allow them to join and eventually take over the mafia. The witness refuted her claims that the carnival owner was the head of a criminal organization. The court rejected her other claims that some evidence and statements were erroneously allowed in the trial, including statements she made spontaneously while in custody, statements she made to police during interrogation, admission of evidence retrieved from her backpack and cell phone; witnesses that attacked her honesty, and a witness for the state who remained in the courtroom after they had already testified. However, the Kansas Supreme Court did find errors in the restitution portion of her sentencing. The court ordered that portion of the case be sent back to the trial court for correction.
