SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The largest university-run film festival in the world takes place right here in Savannah. The SCAD Savannah Film Festival is only three weeks away, and the first tickets were given out Friday morning. Camping out for a night on Broughton Street is all worth it to these students as they will get access to the highly anticipated festival — all for a discounted ticket. Set to kick off later this month between Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival is highly anticipated for students and residents. The eight-day celebration of cinema will welcome over 60,000 guests to enjoy competition screenings, gala premieres and special events featuring industry leaders and emerging filmmakers. Tickets for the 27th annual festival went on sale Friday at 10 a.m., along with the announcement of the full programming lineup. Confirmed honorees you may recognize include actors Lupita Nyong'o, Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer. More big names are to be revealed throughout the day. SCAD Savannah Film Festival announces award recipients for 2024 "It's crazy to think a lot of people have been up for 24 hours. It's also kind of a scary thought that I am going to be hitting that mark here pretty soon. I think it's fun though, I don't think anyone is having a bad time here," said Tyler Gula, one of the students waiting in line for a discounted ticket. WSAV spoke to one of the first people in line, Mark Owens, who had a folding chair set up to sit out the long wait. "So, I got in line at 1:30 p.m. yesterday. Last year, I got here around 7 a.m. I have friends that are super excited about the events here, so just trying to get here as soon as possible... (this year) I personally am super excited to see 'How to Train your Dragon,' and the 'Wild Robot,'" said Owens, a student at SCAD. This year's festival promises to be one of the largest yet.
