MORENO VALLEY — The Canyon Springs and Heritage football teams swapped sides of the field tied at 6 after one quarter of play. Less than 90 seconds later, Canyon Springs led by 16 points. Behind a pair of interceptions to start the second quarter – the first of which was returned for a touchdown by junior linebacker Jacob Wingfield – the Cougars defeated Heritage 56-34 at home Thursday night to open Inland Valley League play and extend its win streak to five. “Every time the defense can generate points for us, you’re always going to take that, you’re always going to celebrate that,” Cougars coach Kyle McFadden said. “That gets everybody going.” On his next pass attempt after the pick six, Heritage senior quarterback Achilles Reveles was intercepted again, this time by Dustin Love. Although the senior linebacker didn’t match his teammate with a touchdown, the Canyon Springs offense needed just three plays to go 20 yards and score, making it a 22-6 game with 10:39 remaining in the half. “We made a lot of mistakes, and they’re all fixable errors, but can’t continue to do that and be in a close game that’s competitive,” Heritage coach Rich McClure said. Reveles found his footing on the following drive, though, completing a 46-yard deep ball before hitting senior slotback Dominic Dunn-Tornatore-Spiker for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Yet for the rest of the night, the Patriots couldn’t catch a break. Driving downfield in the waning minutes of the half after a Canyon Springs punt, Heritage fumbled and turned it over with 2:15 to play. The Cougars scored in 2 minutes, capped off by sophomore quarterback Angel Robles’ second passing touchdown of the half. Canyon Springs (5-1 overall) and Heritage (2-4) traded seven penalties back-and-forth on the opening drives of the third quarter, with the Patriots ultimately punting and Robles finding sophomore wide receiver Aaron Triplett for a 63-yard touchdown. “Angel’s a special kid. He’s the perfect example of a kid you want to have on your team, a leader on your team,” McFadden said. “He’s great off the field, and then you saw his play today. He’s making plays like that all the time.” Related Articles High School Sports | Murrieta Valley football team holds firm despite Norco rally in second half High School Sports | Bloomington football team runs past Arroyo Valley in Skyline League opener High School Sports | IE Varsity’s previews of the top high school football games Friday, Oct. 4 High School Sports | IE Varsity’s previews of the top high school football games Thursday, Oct. 3 High School Sports | Trio helping lift Murrieta Valley boys water polo back to the future Reveles and Dunn-Tornatore-Spiker struck back with a 61-yard connection of their own to make it 36-20, starting a sequence of seven consecutive drives that ended in a touchdown for the two teams. Canyon Springs was able to extend their lead during that span as Heritage fumbled on its subsequent drive, where Love recovered the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Twelve combined first-quarter points ballooned to 90 by the game’s end, but the lead Canyon Springs gained off turnovers was never relinquished. Robles finished the night with 358 yards, five touchdowns and an interception, while Reveles put up 242 yards with three touchdowns and two picks. “It was really important to get this start, based on what we want to do in league,” McFadden said. “We want to get that automatic bid, so getting this first one was really good.”
