RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The second annual Richmond Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration will be coming to Powhatan Hill Park in mid-October. From 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, attendees will learn about and celebrate Virginia's Indigenous tribes at the park, located at 5051 Northampton Street in Richmond. Admission is free, according to the Pocahontas Project. In 2023, organizers honored the Mattaponi Indian Tribe, and this year, it will honor the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe. The following 11 tribes are recognized by Virginia: Mattaponi Pamunkey Chickahominy Eastern Chickahominy Rappahannock Upper Mattaponi Nansemond Monacan Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Nottoway Patawomeck For more information about state-recognized tribes, click here.
