PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Hospitals like Mass General Brigham in Boston may be effected by an IV fluid shortage, after Hurricane Helene damaged the manufacturing plant of one of the nation’s largest suppliers.
According to ABC6’s affiliate WCVB, Baxter International, a health care and medical technology company in North Carolina, was affected by extensive flooding due to the storm.
It’s currently closed for flooding at this time.
According to a representative from Lifespan in Providence, they’re closely monitoring the availability of certain IV fluids following disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, and their supply chain team is actively working to secure additional inventory.
“While we continue to deliver high-quality care, we are taking measures to conserve our existing supply, and are hopeful that the FDA will step in to address the shortages through temporary imports and increased production by alternate manufacturers,” Acting Director, Public Relations and External Affairs Jessica Wharton.
