After another significant solar flare early Thursday, NOAA has made some adjustments to timing what could be a busy next few nights for aurora potential. It now appears unlikely WNY will have anything to see Thursday night. The arrival of the first wave of energy now looks like it wants to arrive Friday morning when daylight will preclude a view. At least some potential could emerge again into Friday night with G2 conditions now in the forecast. We'll be fighting a weak cold front that will drive an increase in cloud cover Friday evening. The good news is it appears at least some clearing could develop after midnight. The bigger chunk of energy that could ignite the best fireworks favors late Saturday into Saturday night. This is where things get interesting, depending on how this energy will interact with what should be an already reverberating magnetic field. Skies look mostly clear and quite favorable for a view, so there's an argument this could be the best shot we'll get out of this. Remember, no one knows with certainty exactly how things will play out. The above should be used as rough guidance, but nothing beats actual confirmation if/when things start popping. I'll be out with the camera in the nights ahead and will keep you updated on what I see.
