ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Mayor Malik Evans introduced new legislation Wednesday that looks to strengthen consequences for drivers that pass school buses while the stop arm is out. "What this allows us to do is introduce an additional layer of protection or mechanism to allow us to ensure that our young people are safe when they're getting on or off the bus and crossing the street," Deputy Mayor Michael Burns with the City of Rochester told News 8. The city would partner with BusPatrol for installation of advanced stop-arm cameras on school buses to be able to capture any violations. The camera footage would be reviewed by BusPatrol and then confirmed by city officials with fines ranging from $250 to $300. "Throughout New York State, it's estimated that 50,000 motorists each school day pass by school busses with the red lights flashing and the stop sign out, and so that's something that this is really meant to just draw their attention," Deputy Mayor Burns said. In addition to approval from Rochester City Council, the Rochester Board of Education must also sign off on the proposal. "Once both of those steps occur, we'll be able to enter into contracts with bus patrol as well as the school district, and then bus patrol will begin installing the cameras on yellow busses, and we'll begin developing plans to roll this out for next school year," Deputy Mayor Burns said. Rochester City Councilmember Bridget Monroe immediately expressed her support and told News 8 Thursday it's a subject that hits close to home. "My son actually had been hit getting off of a school bus in 2021, and I'm hoping that now that we can actually find out what car it is, and then give what I think is a pretty good fine to people for passing by those stop school busses that we're going to start getting people to pay attention," Councilmember Monroe said. Several school districts in Monroe County installed cameras to buses in their fleets back in 2023. The next step for the announced legislation is for Rochester City Council to vote on it at its next meeting on October 22.
