(BCN) -- Many Bay Area gardeners were surprised Thursday by an abrupt announcement that longtime gardening mainstay Annie's Annuals and Perennials in Richmond was closing, effective immediately. Sarah Hundley, current owner of the nursery in North Richmond, said in a notice posted on the company's website that health reasons played a role in the decision. "Over the past few months, I have faced serious and unexpected health challenges. Throughout this difficult time, I've worked tirelessly to explore every possible way to keep the nursery going," the announcement stated. "Sadly, despite my best efforts, the challenges--both personal and business-related--escalated much faster than I ever anticipated, and I could no longer maintain business operations." "Even as I step away, I remain hopeful that Annie's legacy can live on." Annie Hayes, the founder of the nursery at 740 Market Ave., retired and sold the business to Hundley in 2021 after nearly 30 years as owner. On Thursday, many gardeners chimed in on the nursery's Facebook page, some lamenting that no notice was given of the closure and that unused gift cards would not be honored. "Unfortunately, with the closure, the use of gift cards or store credits is effectively discontinued. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding," the nursery website said as part of the closure announcement. No returns are being accepted, but pending orders are being reviewed. The 3-acre nursery featured a wide variety of plants, supplied 20 other nurseries in the Bay Area and grew its plants from seed or cuttings. Copyright © 2024 Bay City News, Inc.
