WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Just over 12% of Kansans are Hispanic, and a new nonprofit in Newton is on a mission to keep their traditions carried from other Latin countries alive. The Latino Vision Association was formed in 2023 to hold events that promote and maintain Hispanic culture in Harvey County. "My mother was in a big family of 13, and most of them moved over here to Newton because of the railroad starting from the 70s," Leonardo Villanueva said. As a first-generation Mexican-American, Villanueva wants the traditions his family brought with them to stay. So this year, the association brought back the Newton Fiesta, which Villanueva said is the first time it's been held in 31 years. Dance groups that stretch generations showed off their moves. "At first, he didn't want to, but like I said, it's a family tradition, and he's gonna do it because it is dying down, and we want to keep it going," Edgar Rodriguez of the Azteca Dance Troupe said. The guys are in Mariachi," Patrice Olais from the Azteca Dance Troupe said. Each event allows traditions to tie the community together.
