SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Drivers are on high alert as deadly accidents continue to be a major issue throughout Springfield. The city of Springfield has seen six deadly pedestrian accidents this year. According to AAA, these types of accidents are down 5% nationwide from 2023, but Hampden County drivers are remaining vigilant. "I do think we have the right away, but if someone walks out in the middle of the road you want to make sure they are safe first," shared a driver from West Springfield, Matthew Beaudin. In September, a mother was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Boston Road and Berkshire Avenue in Springfield. At a McDonalds on Boston Road, two people were seriously injured after crashing their car into the building. Boston Road continues to be an area of concern for drivers due to speeding and frequent accidents. Springfield Police Department announced last week how they plan to change drivers' bad habits on the roads, "Our goal is to change the attitude of these people who are operating the motor vehicles. We put out signs, we put out message boards, we let you know that we're going to be out there. This is all about zero tolerance." Shared Captain David Martin. Message boards are now up along several roads in Springfield, giving drivers an indication of their speed, but some share this just isn't enough. "I think that it would definitely be important to have more signs showing that there may be a crosswalk or just a popular area of people crossing," shared Owen Champlin, a driver from West Springfield.According to WalkMassachusetts, a report shows Springfield ranked second in pedestrian fatalities across the state in 2023 with seven deaths. Law enforcement hopes additional measures will remind drivers to pay attention and slow down. As for pedestrians, police encourage them to be bright and visible, and don't assume a driver sees you.
