'She's homeless': New Bedford woman struggling to find a place to stay after fire
Oct 03, 2024
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Sulema Caraballo is worried about her 66-year-old aunt, who is currently staying at St. Luke's Hospital.
Her aunt Emilinda Agusto, who's disabled and suffers from a number of medical conditions, was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after her apartment building caught fire over the weekend.
Though she wasn't seriously injured, Caraballo said her aunt doesn't want to be discharged until she knows where she will be staying.
"Right now she's homeless," Caraballo explained. "She doesn't have a place to go."

Finding Agusto a place to stay is a mission her friend Barbie Matos is taking seriously.
"[The city keeps telling me] to call here and call there, but I haven't gotten any results," Matos explained. "It's all been dead ends."
12 News reached out to the city regarding Agusto's situation, to which a spokesperson said the fire response team is in contact with those who have been displaced.
But the response isn't always quick, the spokesperson noted, especially since some of the victims have been able to stay with relatives or in a hotel for the time being.
Agusto's daughter and grandson, who were living with her at the time, were able to stay at a hotel temporarily, but the voucher was only for one night.
"They're in the same boat right now," Caraballo said.
Significant smoke and water damage has made Agusto's apartment unlivable and impossible to return to. She also has two dogs that make it even more difficult for her to find somewhere to go.
"I don't know what's next for her," Caraballo said. "Where's the help?"
Caraballo told 12 News the lack of assistance is starting to take its toll on Agusto.
"She lost a daughter eight months ago and now this happened," she said. "She always had a smile on her face, but I really saw her cry and that hurts me."
Agusto's family is working on setting up a Gofundme page to try and drum up support, but for now, Caraballo said they're continuing to call around in hopes of finding a place for her to live.
