MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After Thursday's verdict in the federal trial against three officers accused in Tyre Nichols' death, WREG spoke with family as well as activists. Many said this was a moment where the chant "Justice For Tyre" has a new ring. Family and supportes say at least one battle has been won. "Like they said they are all in prison, they are not getting out anytime soon," said Nichols' uncle Johnny. "Let this be a message to all officers to know that you will reap what you sow." Verdicts announced in Tyre Nichols federal trial Nichols' father Rodney Wells said Thursday's verdict was a long time coming. "We just so very proud that all of them are going to jail today, we can not wait on the sentencing so we will know what their total time will be. But today was a very good day for our family," he said. Activists said they are happy as long as the family is happy, but say the city of Memphis has more work to do. "I just want the family to have some kind of solace, I want Memphis to do the right thing for this family and others there are other Tyre Nichols out there," activist Paula Buress said. Attorneys for the family say they now will be looking to see how the five former officers will be sentenced. "We don't expect them to have any favoritism just because they had a gun and a badge," attorney Ben Crump said. "That's what the community demands when we say equal justice under the law." ► Tyre Nichols and Memphis Police: What we Know More reaction: RowVaughn Wells, Tyre Nichols' mother: “All of them have been convicted of something, and they are all going to jail. ... This has been a long journey for our family.” Reagan Fondren, acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee: "We hope this prosecution provides some measure of comfort as the law enforcement officers tied to his death have been held accountable." Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy: “We commend the diligent work of the US Attorney’s Office. The public deserves to know that those who enforce the law are not above the law: if they use excessive force they’ll be held accountable. While the verdict may not be everything hoped for, we’re fully prepared to move forward with the State’s case. We will await sentencing in federal court, consult with US Attorney’s Office counsel, and take appropriate steps in state court.” Memphis Mayor Paul Young: “My hope for our community is that we continue to respond in peace and that we keep Tyre’s legacy at the heart of our collective reaction to this verdict.” State Sen. London Lamar (D-Memphis): “Today’s verdict brings a measure of justice for Tyre Nichols’ family, who have endured unimaginable pain since his tragic and senseless death. ... While no verdict can bring Tyre back, the conviction of these officers is a critical step in holding those responsible accountable.”
