HONOLULU (KHON2) -- If you've been dealing with changes to your Amazon deliveries, you're not alone. If you live in an apartment building and plan to shop the online retailer's sale next week, or if you want to get a head start on holiday shopping, make sure to leave specific delivery details. If you drive through Honolulu, chances are high you'll see an Amazon delivery van pass by. However, the company stated that its delivery vans currently cover only certain areas on Oahu. Meet the people, stories who made it happen North Shore and Leeward residents still have their packages delivered by USPS and other third-party services, but some town residents have noticed that packages are taking longer to arrive or are not being delivered to the usual spot. "All of the drivers are basically new, and they're not your regular USPS, UPS, or FedEx drivers you had before," explained Tina Yamaki, president of the Retail Merchants of Hawaii. "Amazon hired these local companies to deliver your packages, so it's a learning process now." "You have to be specific about where to drop off your package because not everyone has a door person to receive the packages, or they don't have boxes to take your packages, so it has to be delivered elsewhere," explained Yamaki. "You need to specify a particular place within the building for the delivery." Amazon advised customers experiencing delivery issues to provide detailed delivery instructions to their drivers for a smoother delivery process. Customers can also follow and track their packages in detail using the Amazon app. If you feel packages are taking longer to arrive, keep in mind that this is not a fulfillment center. "A fulfillment center is when you order, and they take products off the shelf, put them in a box, and ship them to you," Yamaki explained. "That is not what we have here in Hawaii; it's purely a distribution center where boxes that are already packed arrive, and it’s like the post office. They send the boxes to Kona, Ewa, Wahiawa, or wherever." She noted that it's not just Amazon deliveries that are taking longer; all packages are experiencing delays due to a significant demand for delivery drivers.
