BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET)—Shots were fired and a suspect was killed after an officer-involved shooting just after midnight Wednesday on the 200 block of Blomquist Drive. Alyssa Buxbaum was taking a shower when the stranger kicked in her back door. "He tried to go in the bathroom," said Buxbaum. "He just banged on the door twice and I was just dead silent on 911 texting 911. And then, he went into my room and just broke everything in there and then later I learned he set some of my clothes on fire." The Bakersfield Police Department says the man barricaded himself in the room and became assaultive toward officers. That's when police shot and killed the suspect. Buxbaum is still in shock. She's staying with her sister. "Even them just coming through their own apartment door just freaks me out. I can't stand the cars going by over here. Honestly, everything's been freaking me out," said Buxbaum. "They can't salvage anything because of the HIV diagnosis the guy had." 21-year-old Buxbaum is a psychology major at CSUB in her last year. She said the intruder destroyed her computer, backpack, school supplies, and glasses leaving her with just the clothes on her back. "This is what I was wearing. It's all I have." Buxbaum said authorities told her she couldn't go home for a week. She thinks it'll take longer to repair the smashed windows and broken doors. Buxbaum said, "He picked out my underwear and my bras, specifically and put them outside on the ground." Nicolas Gonzales is identified as the officer who discharged his firearm. He's been employed with the BPD for 5 years. Neighbor, Beverly Smith said, "We've had some cops around with possible burglaries, but nothing ever resulted like this." Smith has lived in the neighborhood for about 4 years. She saw the whole thing go down. "It's just a crazy situation. There's no words to express. It's just a sad thing," said Smith. Buxbaum has 2 cats. She said her older cat has respiratory issues from the tear gas used in the incident. She said she still couldn't find her other cat she called her baby. She's left with nothing but a question, why was it her house? "My landlord said that that house used to be ran by a bunch of homeless and people on drugs and he seemed like he was also on drugs and he might have thought it was still like that and he just wanted to come into my house and make himself at home."
