BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Another arson fire in downtown Bakersfield happened overnight on Thursday and this, unfortunately, isn't the first time for this location. The B'nai Jacob Jewish Synagogue caught fire Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, as fire officials tell us once again, the fires are suspicious in nature. This is the third time this synagogue has caught fire and the third time it's being investigated as arson. Onlookers saw the fire start and almost immediately go up in flames. "I've seen it just go up in flames, it was like real bad," said Kiki Smith. "It was, like a lot of smoke and stuff like on a horror movie, it was real scary." After the first fire was put out about 9 p.m. Wednesday, it rekindled just hours later. Another witness, Justin Vansunder, said he called the fire department. "After the first fire had been put out, maybe 4 hours after they left, it had started back up," said Vansunder. "It was big, black smoke coming out of everywhere." Vansunder says the fire caught and spread quickly. "It took no more than 30 seconds for the smoke to show up and like 5 more minutes until the flames were shooting from the top," said Vansunder. Pyles Camp raises $30,000 at Compassion Corner fundraiser Vansunder thinks homeless people caused the fire. "Honestly, I think a homeless person just got cold and started a fire, since it caught fire before it just went up like that,"said Vansunder. Bakersfield Fire Department said this is being investigated as arson because the utilities that could start a fire have been removed from the building, over a year ago. No arrests have been made. There have been 551 arson investigations by the Bakersfield Fire Department and 36 arrests have been made so far in 2024. This is the third time this synagogue has caught fire this year. Bakersfield arson investigators telling 17 News on Thursday they've responded to fires at this synagogue a total of six times.
