MUMFORD, N.Y. (WROC) — While you may be familiar with the name Matterport when it comes to apartment hunting or looking at homes online, it’s now being used to digitize museums, like the Genesee Country Village & Museum. The organization has utilized this technology to give an inside look into a number of the historic buildings it has on its property.  Peter Wisby is the Phillip K. Wehrheim Curator of Collections at GCV&M, and for him, he’s happy to make what they have available to more people than ever before “You can be in virtually in a space, but then you can also read further on exhibit copy or read original documents or have some kind of additional experience,” said Wisbey. “It also serves as an accessibility feature for us. So, for areas of historic buildings that are inaccessible by ramps or physical accessibility, we can at least give people an experience of being inside of the building.” The project is the result of a partnership between RIT and GCVM, funded by former museum board member and RIT alumni Phillip K. Werheim. It brings student interns and co-ops in to work across the museum's departments.  “This project was put forward by Izzie Moyer, a recent graduate of the museum studies program at RIT, who went above and beyond our expectations of, you know, what she could do and incorporating all sorts of different aspects, working out of the marketing department, but working closely with the collections and curatorial team to document as many sites as possible,” said Wisbey.  As of now, just 18 buildings have been digitized along with the Village Square, and parts of the John L. Wehle Gallery.  “We have done some of our visitor's favorite buildings. The Hamilton House, the 1870 Italian Eight House, actually goes into multiple floors with Matterport, which is unusual. And then Jones Farm, the Hosmer's Inn, all of the kind of maybe visitor favorites. Maybe we haven't done yours yet, but we will eventually get to it so that you can have a full experience,” said Wisbey.  They’re also planning to add more outdoor space to the tour in addition to what they have already completed around the Village Square. You can access the virtual tours on GCV&M’s website for free and learn more about the process.
