FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Community Regional Medical Center saw more than 370 trauma patients in 2023 from an auto versus cyclist or pedestrian collision. So, the City of Fresno is taking action to make roads safer for bike riders and has installed green lanes, designed to help keep riders and pedestrians safer. Jill Gormley is the assistant director of traffic and engineering services for the City of Fresno and says changes need to be made. "Because, unfortunately, we have a high number of pedestrian vs. vehicle or pedestrian vs bicycle collisions that result in severe injuries or fatalities." Something needed to be done, and the green lanes were one solution. But bringing awareness was another aspect of the plan. “The City of Fresno has been installing green bike lanes around the city for the past couple of years as a way to highlight the bike infrastructure, to draw attention to bicyclists, and make people more aware that there are bicyclists on the road,” Gromley said. There are about 11 miles of protected bike lanes in Fresno, with more on the way. But in addition to the green bike lanes, class four bike facilities are also being installed throughout the city, and are sometimes called protected bike lanes or cycle tracks. Those lanes are reserved strictly for cyclists. “Those are the facilities that you're seeing with the raised posts that provide a barrier between vehicles that are traveling and the bicyclists," Gormley said.
