SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A plan to transform an old Department of Motor Vehicles building in San Francisco into a mixed-use building with housing has earned praise from elected officials. The DMV location at 1377 Fell Street was constructed in 1960. According to California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office, the location no longer complies with health and safety specifications nor meets current DMV requirements. The proposed transformation would see the facility become a complex that would include around 372 homes with a range of affordability. The property, which is owned by the state, is centrally located between the Lower Haight, NoPa, Buena Vista, and Alamo Square. The site, according to the governor's office, is an EPA-designated "Highly Walkable" area that's within half a mile of a major transit stop. Newsom, "including by converting underutilized state property into homes. I'm particularly proud of this site for bringing affordable housing to the heart of San Francisco in a diverse and thriving neighborhood." The plan to transform the facility into housing has been praised by local officials. "Treating our housing shortage like the crisis it is means we need to get creative with how we're using space -- especially with land owned by the state," said State Sen. Scott Weiner (D-San Francisco). "By providing homes near public transit to hundreds of low and middle income San Franciscans, this project is a model for how the state must engage on housing." "I also want to thank the DMV for their leadership for quickly pivoting from a plan to rebuild their office to one that provides critical and much needed affordable housing," said Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco). "This project demonstrates the incredible work that can happen when local and state government work together." The plan to transform the Fell Street DMV was enacted under an executive order by Newsom to build more affordable housing.
