SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The port strikes that started on Oct. 1 have ended on Thursday after just three days. A contact agreement has been reached. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance released a statement on Facebook. "The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues," the ILA said. "Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume." Close to 45,000 port workers from Maine to Texas had been on strike, including Savannah. The strike came after a stall in contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance. The workers went on strike Tuesday after at 12:01 a.m. Workers argued that their wages have stagnated, and these concerns have been enhanced by rising inflation. Coming just days after Hurricane Helene hit the Southeast, many shared concerns over potential shortages, especially in heavily affected areas. Panic buying also ensued shortly after the strike was announced, focusing on toilet paper, food items like meat and other things like formula.
