SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - Georgia Power has announced that 90% of customers who lost power during Hurricane Helene have now had electricity restored. The company estimates that 1.2 Million people were without power after the storm wrecked the region last Thursday. They expect to reach 95% restoration by Saturday, October 5. The restoration accounts for approximately 85% of the impacted customers in the Valdosta and Macon areas. With extensive flooding and tree damage, Augusta is the most heavily affected by Hurricane Helene. Nearly 65% of customers impacted by the storm in the Augusta area have been reconnected, and teams continue to work around the clock to reconnect all customers.  Updated damage estimates illustrating the extensive destruction of Hurricane Helene included: 8,300+ power poles that needed to be repaired or replaced 21,000+ spans of wire damaged equivalent to approximately 1,000 miles  1,600+ transformers damaged 3,200+ trees on power lines were removed or addressed to restore power Some 20,000 personnel are continuing to work around the clock for full repair to all impacted areas. Customers can continue to monitor the Georgia Power outage map for estimated restoration time.
