CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An armed man who stole a package containing an iPhone from a Chesterfield County porch could be linked to at least two other similar incidents, including a recent theft in Henrico County. On Thursday, Oct. 3, Capt. Randy Horowitz with the Chesterfield County Police Department spoke to the press about a report of an armed porch pirate in a Chesterfield neighborhood. According to Horowitz, a package containing an iPhone was delivered by FedEx to the victim's home and left on the porch. Within the next fifteen minutes, a masked man with a handgun ran up onto the porch, quickly grabbed the package and ran off. On his way back to his vehicle -- described as a white car -- the suspect can be seen raising the hand holding the gun at a nearby man on a lawn mower. He also raises the hand holding the package at another man on the street. Railroad crossing closed in New Kent due to crash between train and vehicle "[The suspect lifting his gun] doesn't really appear like it's a threatening motion -- but never the less, it's very concerning that someone [would] be running around, waving a gun around in Chesterfield County," Horowitz said. The suspect then gets into the white car and flees the area. All of this was caught on the victim's doorbell camera. (Video courtesy of the Chesterfield Police Department. Audio is Capt. Randy Horowitz speaking to the press on Oct. 3.) A similar incident, also involving the theft of a package containing a phone, took place in Henrico County in recent days. According to Horowitz, the Henrico thief and the Chesterfield thief have similar physical appearances and drive similar-looking vehicles. They also both wore a ski mask. "We're working off the theory, at this point, that this is one suspect for both these cases," Horowitz said. "These are the first two where we've identified a weapon on the suspect." In reviewing previous cases of a similar nature, Horowitz said at least one case involved a similar-looking suspect and a similar-looking vehicle. The suspect in this case, as mentioned above, was not carrying a weapon during this prior theft. "We're hoping that, putting all three of these together, that we'll be able to make some progress quickly," Horowitz said. Chesterfield County has seen a "tremendous" amount of packages stolen from porches in recent years, especially valuable ones, according to Horowitz. "We've been working with our regional partners and I've been working with FedEx to try and determine how this is happening," Horowitz said, adding that the department has "theories" but no definitive answer at this point. 19-year-old Chesterfield man charged with murder in connection to killing of 26-year-old When asked, Horowitz said some such theories include that porch pirates could be following delivery trucks around on their routes, or that they could be getting packages' tracking numbers by some means. "They very easily could just follow a truck out from the delivery [route's] start," Horowitz said. "Follow it and just go, 'Oh, this feels like the right spot. This is a nice house. I betcha they got something valuable.'" Such thefts are happening at homes all over the county, according to Horowitz, with no particular neighborhood or neighborhoods known to be at more risk than another. Horowitz said the department is encouraging Chesterfield residents to not have packages delivered to their front door when they will not be home to bring them inside. He recommended scheduling deliveries or utilizing any of the many pick-up boxes in Chesterfield. "I understand why you have [a package] delivered to your front porch," Horowitz said. "But if you're not gonna be there, we really ask you not to have it delivered that way." Chesterfield County probationary police officer charged with filing false police report after off-duty crash Horowitz also asked that delivery drivers contact the department right away if they notice anything suspicious during their route, such as a person following them. No additional information is available at this time. If you have information that may lead to the identification of the suspect involved in these most recent armed thefts, contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-0660.
