POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Want to help reforest land in Virginia? Powhatan State Park will host an event on Saturday where attendees will collect acorns and tree nuts to be used to plant trees throughout the Commonwealth. From 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, a ranger at Powhatan State Park will lead a walk through the forest as a part of a James River Master Naturalist project. The group will meet at Shelter 2 in the park before heading on the walk. Along the way, attendees will collect acorns and tree nuts that will then be identified, sorted and sent to the Virginia Department of Forestry. Organizers said these will then be planted and sold as saplings to Virginia landowners to reforest their land. The guided walk will be between one and three miles long, but those who attend can opt to cover a shorter distance on their own if they wish. Visitors are recommended to bring water and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Can't make it, but still want to participate? You can collect acorns and tree nuts from your own yard, separate them by species and donate them to the department to help in the replanting effort. For more details, click here.
