CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Residents said the noise from Cranston’s Police Academy is “out of control.” Loud gun shots have been ringing out in Western Cranston, according to residents, now more than ever before. “We hear gunfire Monday through Friday, it can be anywhere from [8 a.m.] to [6 or 6:30 p.m.],” resident Patricia Schoeninger said. Schoeninger said she has lived in her Cranston home for 47 years now and her children attended Cranston High School West back in the 90s. “There was never this type of gunfire,” she added. :My children never heard gunfire when they were in school. Maybe since 2015, 2016 the barrage of gunfire we hear is intolerable.” The police academy and gun range on Phenix Avenue sit right across the street from Cranston High School West and Western Hills Middle School. “I feel for some people it may be a little distracting, but for me personally, not really,” Cranston West student Kingston Moffett said. Many Cranston residents who live right near the range said they are not against the police training, they just don’t want to hear the loud gunshots anymore. “It’s not an indictment on the police department and it’s not an indictment on the politicians,” David Izzi said. “Is it possible to get funds to enclose it?” Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins shared a statement with ABC 6 News, The city administration hasn’t received a complaint from the school department about use of the range. The range is a valued asset for our police force as it allows officers to conduct top-notch training to protect the community. I assure all residents that public safety and concern for the well-being of our city’s students remains a top priority. Categories: Cranston, News, Rhode Island
