TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The West Place Animal Sanctuary said that Erna the Crested Pekin Duck died on Sept. 30.
The sanctuary said that Erna was 17-and-a-half years old, and was the last member of the original group of animals the shelter rescued in 2007.
Erna was a foster mother to young birds at the sanctuary, and had one biological daughter, named Sesame.
“We believe Erna was the oldest duck in Rhode Island, and perhaps the country,” the sanctuary said.
The sanctuary said it plans to dedicate a memorial garden to Erna.
It added that it is currently in competition for the Defender Service Awards, which can be voted on here.
