NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Many have begun rushing to the stores due to the ongoing port strike. Rouse's Regional Director Chris Campbell says it's keeping them busy. "We're well prepared. We have plenty of sources when it comes to distribution networks, buyers, or working around the clock, to see through a product for us," said Campbell. Day 2 of dockworker strike continue, negotiations at a standstill "Produce doesn't stay on the shelves very long. I think you're going to start seeing empty shelf space," said Louisiana's Agricultural and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain. Not only have consumers begun to panic, but so have farmers. Strain explains a lengthy strike could affect Louisiana farmers, who produce the largest amount of rice in the world. "The rice that's in bags and in sacks, all that is loaded by longshoremen. Our grain elevators are still functional. However, those containers that have, you know, bagged rice, and you know, stuff that's in bags and small containers that is going to back up," said Strain. Investigation underway after shots fired at federal agents in New Orleans East Strain also adds that mechanical parts that farmers use come through the ports. "We still have the availability of spare parts, cutter blades if you're looking at oil filters microchips that may be necessary for the computerized equipment, you know. We're concerned that we need to go ahead and get this done and behind us," said Strain. Strain says he hopes the strike comes to an end soon, because the state's economy loses millions each day it continues. "Normally about 1,300 containers are moved each and every day. You are looking at about $12 million a day in Louisiana. Especially, you know, those things that are absolutely critical to move the economy are no longer available stop and start backing up," said Strain.
