BARNARDSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — As western North Carolina continues to struggle with access to food and water in the wake of Hurricane Helene, The Salvation Army is there to help. FOX8 is partnering with The Salvation Army to raise money and help get critical resources to those who need them most. FOX8 teams up with Salvation Army to bring supplies to devastated areas in western North Carolina On Thursday, we rode along with a Salvation Army team from Greensboro. The team stopped at a church about an hour outside of Asheville where they are setting up a shelter. FOX8 reporter Gretchen Stenger says staff was excited when they heard that The Salvation Army had arrived with food. Being in the mountains, these teams are coming face to face with the devastation that the storm brought. "I woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning," said Barnardsville resident Gunner Ball. "Got told to grab a pair of clothes and grab a dog and get out the door." Ball says this has been the most horrific week of his life. He lost his home, all of his belongings, even his birth certificate. That's why the work The Salvation Army is doing is so critical. "We've already seen the happiness on peoples faces seeing that they are going to receive their first hot meal in a week," Stenger said. "This is because of our FOX8 viewers and their donations that things like this are able to happen out here." How you can help The Salvation Army is collecting donations to provide "emergency aid, food, drinks, emotional and spiritual care, and long-term recovery services to survivors and rescue workers" in western North Carolina. You can donate using the blue button below. 100% of your donation will go towards Hurricane Helene relief. Donate to support Hurricane Helene relief here
