NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WBCD) - Election officials encourage residents to check their registration status. Charleston County has seen over 4,700 people register in the past month. However, the county's board of elections predict that the turnout rate will be similar compared to the past. "I would say in the presidential election years, we see consistent voter turnout around 70 percent," Isaac Cramer, executive director of Charleston County Board of Elections, said. "Now it can go up or a little below that, but that's consistently what we've seen in the last 20 years. Going forward, I don't really see a huge spike, we're planning for that 70 percent number." However, Dorchester County officials said it expects a significant amount of voters to cast their ballots in-person this election season. Nearly 5,300 residents registered this summer. "I don't think we'll quite see the numbers that we saw in 2020. I am expecting a high turnout statewide and for Dorchester County. At least anywhere from 50 to 60 percent." South Carolinians can also opt for early voting, which opens on Oct. 21. Officials encourage voters to take advantage of this convenient process. "It doesn't matter whether you have a reason or not," Cramer said. "That's the great thing about voting early ahead of Election Day. You just show up with your voter ID, we recommend that to skip the election day lines."  Voter registration deadlines are coming to an end this week. On Oct. 4, in-person registration closes, while on Oct. 6 the online portal shuts off.
