SANDY SPRING, Md. (DC News Now) -- The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has released new details and the name of a teenage girl who died in a crash on Wednesday. Police said the teen was 17-year-old Sanaa Virtue Vil of Brookeville, Md. MCPD's investigation revealed that on Oct. 2, just before 8 a.m., Vil was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla north on Norwood Road, near Ashton Forest Way, when she failed to navigate a turn and collided into a wooden telephone pole. When police officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived, they pulled Vil and two passengers -- a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy -- from the car. Vil died there. The two teenagers were taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. Montgomery County organization spreads driver, pedestrian safety awareness Vil was a senior at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, Maryland, and played on the girls' basketball team. In a letter sent to staff and families, Principal Timothy Britton described her as an outstanding student. "Losing a young life is one of the most difficult and painful experiences we face as a community.Sanaa was an outstanding student who was active in the Black Student Union and a member of our Varsity Girls' Basketball team. In moments like these, we are reminded of the importance of leaning on one another for support, empathy, and comfort," Britton said in the letter. "We extend our deepest condolences to Sanaa’s family, and I know that we all hold them in ourthoughts during this unimaginable time." The Sherwood Girls' Varsity Basketball Team released a statement on X saying in part, "There are not enough words to describe how heartbroken we are at the passing of a member of our Sherwood GBB family, Sr. Sanaa Vil. She was an instant flood of light in the darkest of rooms, extremely charismatic, a natural-born leader, and one of the kindest people on the planet. On the court, she was the toughest of competitors, could beat anyone in the county in a foot race from one end to the other, and truly found her happy place with the ball in her hands." Sherwood officials said teams of psychologists, social workers, and counselors will be available to provide counseling services to students and staff over the next coming days.
