Violent Crime Incidents Down 17.5% in 2024

As of October 1, 2024, the year-to-date numbers indicate that the total number of crime incidents reported by the Tallahassee Police Department are down 7.9% when compared to the same period in 2023.
TR’s last report indicated the total number of crime incidents was down 6.5% year-to-date (YTD).
The numbers show that property crime incidents are down 2.9% and violent crime incidents are down 17.5% during the period.
Property crimes encompass burglaries, thefts, and incidents of vandalism. Violent incidents include aggravated assaults, armed robberies, and physical altercations.
A look at specific crimes (see table below) reveals that the 7.9% decrease in property crime is being driven by a 2.5% decrease in auto related incidents and a 10.0% decrease in commercial burglaries.
The YTD violent crime data shows that robbery incidents were down 20.0%, while assault & battery incidents were down 15.8%.
The Four-Week Trend
The YTD downward trend is being driven by a recent double-digit decrease in violent crime incidents. For the four-week period ending September 29th, the number of violent crime incidents have dropped 49.0% when compared to the same period in 2023.
However, over the last four weeks there has been an increase in property crimes led by a 28.9% increase in auto burglaries and thefts. On Thursday, September 18th, TPD reported 24 auto burglary incidents and two auto thefts.
Fatal Shootings
During the period, there have been 19 fatal shootings in 2024, compared to 19 fatal shooting deaths in 2023. In 2023, the year ended with a total of 24 fatal shootings.
