FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A former Dartmouth police officer will spend at least a decade behind bars for raping a child and molesting a teenager.
Shawn Souza, 42, was sentenced Thursday morning to serve 10 to 15 years in state prison, followed by two years of supervised probation.
Following a three-day jury trial, Souza was found guilty on Wednesday of two counts of aggravated rape of a child, one count of rape of a child by force, and one count of indecent assault and battery of a person 14 or older.

According to prosecutors, evidence presented in court revealed that Souza raped a young girl when she was between the ages of six and eight from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, he was convicted of molesting a 15-year-old girl in 2013.
Souza was arrested in April 2019 and had been a member of the Dartmouth Police Department since 2008.
"The officer’s actions were a betrayal of the trust that the public holds in us. We take an oath to protect our citizens, not harm them—especially the most vulnerable," Dartmouth Police Chief Brian Levesque who was in attendance during Thursday's hearing, said in a statement.
"Clearly, the officer’s actions do not represent the values of the Dartmouth Police Department," Levesque continued. "We offer our thoughts and support to the victims and their families."
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said this was the second trial held in this case after a mistrial was declared two years ago when the jury could not come to a unanimous verdict.
