CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - The Camden County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that over 70 dogs were rescued from a residence in Shiloh. Local animal shelter rescues nearly 20 dogs from hoarding house; needs community support According to a Facebook post, Camden County Animal Control conducted a welfare check after several concerned citizens reported issues with the condition of the animals on the property. During the check the resident admitted to owning 25 dogs, but refused to allow a full inspection. However, the dogs that were visually checked during the welfare check were said to show "clear signs of health deficiencies." After this, the resident showed an interest in surrendering the dogs, prompting the sheriff's office to reach out to various organizations for assistance. As a result of the impact of Helene in the western region of North Carolina however, many organizations were not available for assistance. Through the help of the NC Department of Agriculture, Pasquotank Animal Control, Southern Hope Animal Rescue, Pasquotank Animal Hospital and the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina, over 70 dogs were successfully voluntarily surrendered. ‘Damage is unimaginable’ in Chimney Rock after images show half of village wiped out "Our top priority in this case has been the health and safety of these animals," Sheriff Kevin Jones said. "We are grateful to the organizations and individuals who stepped in to help, ensuring the dogs were taken to a safe environment where they can receive the proper care and treatment." Currently, the dogs are in the care of a local animal welfare organization, where they are receiving needed medical attention. Shortly after the surrender, the Camden County Sheriff's Office were able to execute a search warrant on the property, where deputies were able to fully access the conditions the dogs were being kept in. Deputies said more information will be provided "when appropriate," but said that an investigation is ongoing.
