North Carolina parents face abuse charges after toddler was hospitalized for injuries

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Parents of an 18-month-old child are charged with felony child abuse after the child was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.
Pitt County Sheriff's deputies responded Sept. 15 to Maynard Children's Hospital in relation to an abused child.

After investigation, Douglas Matthew Gurkins, 38, and Krystyna Gurkins, 32, were charged with felony child abuse.
Douglas Gurkins was charged with two counts of felony child abuse in which an intentional assault resulted in serious bodily injury and one count of felony child abuse for failing to provide necessary medical care to the victim after the assault.
He was jailed without bond in the Pitt County Detention Center.
Krystyna Gurkins was charged with one count of felony child abuse for failing to provide necessary medical care to the victim after the assault and one count of felony child abuse for a grossly negligent omission in the care of a child, resulting in serious bodily injury.
She was jailed in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $150,000 secured bond.
