GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis stopped by Local Five on Thursday morning to discuss cybersecurity tips and ongoing scams, election security, and an upcoming K9 fundraiser. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which brought us to the first topic: how people can stay safe while online. "We can't emphasize it enough, change your passwords on your devices and online accounts, don't use the same password for everything, and update your computer software," began Chief Davis. ‘Operation Song’ makes trip to Green Bay, helping Veterans tell their life stories through music Cryptocurrency scams also coincide with cybersecurity with Chief Davis saying it is currently a huge problem. "Usually the way this is initiated is someone calls you and says you have some sort of problem that only they can fix, such as your social security number has been suspended or you have a warrant out for your arrest and they ask you to send cryptocurrency or gift cards, that is always a scam," stated Chief Davis. "If you're suspicious at all, don't do it," added Chief Davis. "If you think you've been scammed, call us, sometimes there are ways for us to help you get your money back." The next topic on today's Community Update was the upcoming election day and GBPD's preparations for security. State legislators renew push to eliminate tax on retirement income for Wisconsin seniors "We've been working for the last couple of years and we started this process in the 2022 elections where we work closely with the City Clerks office, the Mayor's office, city entities, and the county to keep them safe," said Chief Davis. "There are a few things that we focus on; we want to keep our voters safe, we want to keep everyone involved with the election process safe, as well as the elections themselves." The last topic discussed was an upcoming event to help fundraise for GBPD's K9 Unit, with Scott's Subs hosting a Dine to Donate event. "This is going to be on Wednesday, October 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. with our K9 Officers. You can stop by Scott's Subs on Huron Road and get some good food, and if you're so inclined you can make a donation to our K9 Unit," Chief Davis concluded. Scott's Subs will also be sharing the proceeds of the event with the K9 Unit.
