FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Historic Meese Chapel hits the road on Thursday, leaving behind its 120-year-old home, but preserved for community members with childhood memories behind the building's doors. Although the move is about 1.1 miles long, the journey took 2 hours, half of the time it was expected to take. The chapel began to move at 8 a.m. from the DeKalb County Airport, traveling west on CR 60, making a right turn onto CR 427, and continuing on the country road until the building reached it's destination at the DeKalb County Horsemen's Association. Taking the time to preserve this chapel was well worth it to some community members.Margaret Gaskill was baptized in the chapel. She said she had fond memories of bible school, potlucks and even getting married under the chapel's green roof. While the building has moved about a mile away, she is glad these memories stay safe between those white walls Drought conditions improve but persist across NE Indiana and NW Ohio "I'm so happy they didn't bulldoze it down," Gaskill said. "I'm just real thrilled about it because there's lots of memories there." According to the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, traffic was restricted between CR 60 and CR 427 in DeKalb County from 8 a.m. to noon. The move comes after the Dekalb County Airport bought the property last year. The DeKalb County Horsemen's Association launched the "Movin' Meese" crowdfunding campaign to save the building from demolition, and the organization surpassed its goal of $25,000. This money saved the chapel from the risk of being demolished and helped locate the chapel to its new home at the horsemen's association. The Meese Chapel took about 2 hours to move. The Meese Chapel sat at it's original location for 120 years. Traffic was restricted while the chapel was on the road.
