Charleston officers deploying to North Carolina to assist with storm recovery
Oct 03, 2024
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Police officers will be deployed to areas in North Carolina that were hit hard by Hurricane Helen and devastating flooding.
The officers will assist with security at distribution centers, and provide fuel escorts and public safety around critical infrastructure in Henderson County, Buncombe County, and Fairview as the restoration process begins.
“We’ve all seen the devastation in Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina. The rebuilding process will take time—weeks, months, and in some areas, years. In response, countless people have stepped up to help, and our officers are doing the same,” the department said.
Officers will be deployed October 7 – 17.
To further help with recovery, the department is accepting relief donations through a “Pack the Trailer” initiative at their headquarters on Lockwood Drive through October 11.
Donations will be delivered as officers arrive on site. They said baby supplies and formula are especially needed, and provided a list of essential items they are working to collect:
Baby formula, diapers, and wipes
Personal hygiene products
Water and non-perishable, ready-to-eat food
Over-the-counter medications
The department is also collecting items to support the first responders in North Carolina, including:
Bottled water and energy drinks
Protein bars or other quick snacks
First aid kits and medical supplies
Flashlights and batteries
Work gloves, safety goggles, and other protective gear
Portable phone chargers
Sunscreen and insect repellent
Donations can be dropped off at CPD headquarters (180 Lockwood Boulevard) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. through October 11.
Anyone needing assistance unloading items can notify the front desk or call 843-720-2427.
