BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Jeremy King, who took a plea deal in connection with his role in the shooting death of a 5-year-old boy, is expected to testify Thursday morning at the murder trial of co-defendant Jonathan Knight. Judge Charles R. Brehmer said King's testimony is expected to begin around 10 a.m. 17 News will live blog the proceedings. Both King and Knight were charged in the death of Kason Guyton, shot Feb. 23, 2017 while a passenger in a car that had just left Maya Cinemas. It's believed the car's driver, a rival gang member of King and Knight, was the intended target. Brehmer denied a request from King's attorney, Andrew Flier of Encino-based Levine, Flier and Flier, to close the courtroom to the public during his client's testimony. Flier said he was concerned for King's safety. The judge said extra safety measures were in place. He also said King was not being transported with other inmates. Although King is expected to testify Thursday, he'll be sentenced on a later date to time served. Knight faces life in prison if convicted as charged.
