HOPEWELL TWP. — D&R Greenway Land Trust is hosting a reenactment party on October 27 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hillside Farm in Hopewell. The event marks the start of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing. In June 1778, over 10,000 Continental Soldiers camped at this location for three days before the Battle of Monmouth. The organization received funding from Mercer County Cultural & Heritage Division to create a video with the 3rd New Jersey Regiment reenactors. Dr. Richard Veit from Monmouth University and filmmaker Zachary Smith are contributing to the project. The video will be shared with the public and local television stations. Attendees can dress in period costumes to be featured in the video. D&R Greenway preserved the 800-acre Hillside Farm after it was donated by Betty Wold Johnson’s family in December 2021. “We’re the garden state, where’s the garden going to be one day if we don’t take care of some of the land?” Betty said in a previous video supporting D&R Greenway’s work. “So, let’s try to save as much as we can.” The event supports D&R Greenway’s mission to protect open space and farmland in Central New Jersey. Information on period dress can be found at drgreenway.org/Extra. Tickets are available for $177.80 per person or $250 per couple at www.drgreenway.org or 609-924-4646.
