Local group continues hurricane relief efforts; here's how to help
Oct 03, 2024
A local group is doing what it can to help those affected by Hurricane Helene.
The Civilian Crisis Response Team, a nonprofit volunteer group dedicated to helping communities in time of need, has set up several drop-off sites for hurricane relief donations.
It's the same group State Rep. Mike Speedy coordinated with to fly supplies to North Carolina.
The group can only accept certain items and is being selective about what it transports.

“This is VITAL to insure we keep the aircraft within weight and balance limits, and to insure we are not transporting anything which could be dangerous or break FAA regulations,” the group wrote in a Facebook post.
The supplies are being flown into North Carolina by airplane. In many cases, after arrival, the supplies are being taken by helicopter to areas inaccessible by land.
The following items are accepted:
Baby formula (powdered)
Diapers
Wet wipes
Small bagged pet food, 15 pounds or less
Canned pet food
Ready to eat food in sturdy packaging (tuna, peanut butter, etc.—nothing requiring an opener)
Portable electric lanterns (solar is best, battery is fine if you provide batteries)
Trash bags
Toilet paper
Sanitary napkins
Hygiene items (toothpaste, mouthwash, Dude Wipes/adult wet wipes)
Plastic silverware/paper plates
Plastic tarps of any size
Insulin needles (no insulin or other medications)
Alcohol wipes
“If it isn't on the list, we can't accept it,” the group said. “We aren't trying to turn away help, we just have to be selective due to the way we are coordinating deliveries.”

If you can't make it to one of the drop-off sites, a monetary donation is the best way to help. The group said any monetary donations will go to buy items from its list. You can learn more here.
