Northern Virginia shelters looking for adopters after taking in animals devastated by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina

ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) -- After Hurricane Helene, a few Northern Virginia animal shelters are bringing in puppies, kittens, cats and dogs who were left in need of care and a home in the wake of the storm.
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Fairfax County received nearly 100 animals from North Carolina. Neighboring shelters in Northern Virginia, including the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA), took in some of the animals to help quicken the adoption process.

AWLA took in 10 cats and hopes community members can adopt -- or at least provide a foster home -- for them.
"We don't have a lot of information about where the cats were from before they came to us. Which I think is just a testament to how urgent the situation is that Bissel and Homeward Trails and all these organizations just had to get in as quickly as they could, help who they could and bring these cats out," Chelsea Jones with AWLA, said.
She said they believe many of the cats came from shelters in the areas hardest hit by Helene.
Information on how to adopt or foster at both AWLA and Homeward Trails can be found on their websites.
