LANHAM, Md. (DC News Now) — Shoppers in Prince George’s County are hitting local grocery stores with a vengeance as the massive dockworkers strike continues. Many shoppers like Cowanda Hairston are worried stores like Costco and Wegmans will run out of products. “This shows how this trickles down to all of us and Costco is pretty much out of lots of necessities, so everyone is in trying to gear up and stock up and to prepare for the worst," Hairston said. "They are running dry and everyone is in a panic mode because we don’t know what will happen next." ‘Machines don’t feed families’: Thousands of dockworkers strike at ports along East, Gulf Coasts About 45,000 union members picketing could soon slow the supply chain. In the DMV alone, census data shows ports in Virginia and Baltimore are in the country’s top 10 in cargo with tons of cars, furniture, coffee and sugar. He and his wife visited Costco to load up on as much bread, bottled water and paper towels as they could. “By the time we got here all the shelves were empty and I got a couple cases of water and some paper towels. That’s all I was able to get," Daniels said. "They need to put a limit on the amount of items people can get because they are here rushing in and out to start loading up."
