ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Amid a national pilot shortage a program in Upstate New York aims to fill the gap by training pilots a bit younger than usual. An airplane simulator at BOCES in Hudson allows high school seniors to get some experience piloting an aircraft without leaving the ground. The simulator moves to mimic what it's like to be in flight and deal with actual turbulence. "I mean it's really indescribable. I mean you're by yourself and you've got to trust your instincts that you know what you do and that you were trained right," one student Adele Heuer said. This free program gives pilot access to local students who may otherwise not be able to afford it. The hope is these students will get inspired and perhaps go on to get their commercial pilots license or join the military.
