SELMA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Selma's mayor is pulling signs showing an endorsement from the father of fallen Selma Police Officer Gonzalo Carrasco Jr. "to show my respect" to the family. Scott Robertson's bid to be re-elected as Mayor of the City of Selma had included an apparent endorsement from Gonzalo Carrasco Sr., the father of the police officer killed in the line of duty in January 2023. In a social media post on Wednesday, Robertson said that the endorsement was received from Officer Carrasco's father - but he was now pulling the campaign materials showing that endorsement. Robertson's announcement came after the family of fallen Selma Police Officer Gonzalo Carrasco Jr. called for Scott Robertson's mayoral campaign to stop politicizing the fallen officer's image for re-election. In a statement sent to YourCentralValley.com, received before Robertson's social media post, Selma's mayor said that Gonzalo Carrasco Sr. "willingly endorsed my campaign for Mayor of Selma." My campaign did not capitalize on his grief, rather it was meant to convey my respect and convey the great honor bestowed on me by Mr. Gonzalo Carrasco Sr. by his endorsement and willingness to record his video and to show his support for my re election campaign. Scott Robertson, current Mayor of Selma According to the Selma Police Officers Association (POA), a campaign flyer shows Scott Robertson standing next to Carrasco Jr.'s memorial with Carrasco Jr.'s father with words that read, "Re-Elect Scott Robertson for Selma Mayor. Proudly endorsed by Gonzalo Carrasco Sr. Father of Fallen Selma PD Officer Gonzalo Carrasco who gave his life protecting our city." The Selma Police Officers Association (POA) said the use of the photo is inappropriate given the family was never notified nor gave their permission. The association also released a letter sent to the mayor on Sept. 30 by Carrasco Sr. condemning the use of his son's image for politics that read in part: “On behalf of my family, the people who knew and loved Gonzalo the most, we know that he never would have wanted this…Neither myself, nor any member of my family endorses your candidacy or anyone else’s. We are not political, and this is not about politics. This is about doing what is right and honoring the memory of my son.” Gonzalo Carrasco Sr. Officer Carrasco was shot and killed on Jan. 31, 2023, after officials say a homeowner had flagged him down alerting him to a suspicious man on her property. As Officer Carrasco approached the suspect, he was shot several times and he later passed away in the hospital.
