BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV)—A second Beaufort County teacher is fighting back against one citizen who allegedly accused her of "grooming" her students. Kathleen Harper filed her suit in Beaufort County court last month. Harper, a teacher at Hilton Head Island Middle School (HHIMS) said that David Cook engaged in a "relentless attack" with "numerous false and defamatory comments" in email and on websites about Harper after one of her lessons about "modern day slavery."  She is the second teacher from HHIMS to sue Cook. Mardy Burleson is suing several people, including Cook, for falsely accusing her of inappropriate conduct with students after she asked middle schoolers their preferred pronouns. In the suit, Burleson said the group held a “false, defamatory and outrageous campaign” to harm across social media platforms, podcasts and even at school board meetings.  Burleson also said she feared for her life and her family's safety because of the attacks. Here is the Harper’s full suit:  Harper-Civil-SuitDownload This is a developing story and WSAV will continue to update as more information becomes available.
