NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Communities on the East Coast are still trying to pick up the pieces in the wake of Hurricane Helene. That includes one musician who’s from New Mexico and now lives in North Carolina.  She’s now stuck here in New Mexico, waiting for water and power to be restored to her small town. Traveling is just part of the gig, and for Tina Collins, it brought her back to New Mexico to perform in Santa Fe on Wednesday. “I did live in Taos for about four years back in the day, that's where I started my music project," said Collins, an indie folk music performer also known by her stage name: Tina and Her Pony. U.S. Forest Service starts reseeding efforts in South Fork burn scar What was supposed to be a short stop along her tour has turned into a bit of an extended stay. Collins lives in Marshall, North Carolina, which has been devastated by Hurricane Helene. “The day that I planned on flying out west for my tour, which was about a week ago, the river in my little town where I live, which is called Marshall, North Carolina, started rising pretty rapidly due to hurricane Helen," she explained. The flooding caused by the storm took over her home. “There was six feet of water running through the downtown of my town, Marshall, and 12 hours later, there was 12 feet of water running down the main street. So, all the businesses have been totally decimated, and, you know, the train tracks are running into the river, and my building was pretty badly flooded," Collins said. For the time being, she can’t go back to Marshall. Meanwhile, her partner, who is a paramedic, is back at home trying to help the community. “They're very vaguely saying weeks until water and power is restored because there was so much damage to the infrastructure," Collins told News 13. She also shared this message for New Mexicans as North Carolina recovers.“Please, please, keep us in your thoughts and prayers. And you know, even though New Mexico is very far away from North Carolina, we're all in this together.” KRQE News 13's parent company, Nexstar, has partnered with the American Red Cross to help those affected by Hurricane Helene.
