RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – One of the main roads out to Rio Rancho's mostly barren "city center" area is finally about to get something you'd expect near any "city center." The City of Rio Rancho is set to widen Unser from Cherry Road, north to Paseo del Volcan.   "I think it's a great idea and it'll definitely boost the economy and growth for Rio Rancho," said Tim Bateman, a Rio Rancho resident.   The project will start at Cherry Road and end at Paseo del Volcan, covering nearly two miles of Unser, which has been eyed for expansion for 20 years.  ACLU suing former officers, APD over DWI corruption scheme The project would include widening the road from two to four lanes and adding LED lights. Other improvements include adding storm drains, sidewalks, and bike lanes. The city is also planning to upgrade landscaping and add connections to future roads. Some neighbors think the project could help reduce heavy traffic.  "You start getting around Thursday, Friday, Saturday and on the opposite direction, a lot of RV's, a lot of people going out camping, I think that it could be helpful," said Lee Smith, a Rio Rancho resident.  "I think it's something that would be very beneficial for our community because with neighborhoods growing and with more families coming in, I feel like if we add something like more sidewalks or like people and their families can walk around it would help their safety because we don't really have that on Paseo," said Kimberly Jurgens, a Rio Rancho resident.  Bateman owns land in the area and thinks the upgrades will help usher in long-awaited development.  "Everybody is going to complain about construction, it's just the way it is but without having construction and bringing out that growth, it just sits as an open desert," said Bateman. The project is still in the design phase and construction is expected to begin in spring.
